Tonight in Omaha, Nebraska, Donald Trump proved once again that basic American history has completely eluded him saying “a vote for republicans is a vote for the American dream – it’s a vote for acknowledgement that Abraham Lincoln was a republican”. Trump finished by the stating that “not a lot of people know that”.

Now this fallacy is something you run into all the time when going up against Republicans who try to claim that Abraham Lincoln is one of them because of party affiliation.

And while it’s true Lincoln was in fact a republican, the Republican Party of the 1860’s was completely different from the Republican Party of 2020.

An entire history course can be dedicated to the subject, however, it’s a well known fact that the Democratic and Republican Parties switched platforms in the mid 20th century. I invite anyone to go and look up Strom Thurmond, the Dixiecrats, the Civil Rights Act, and the Southern Strategy which is still used by the GOP to this day.
