The 118th congress of the United States elected their speaker late Friday night after a long, contentious process that included one GOP congressman lunging at another GOP congressman.

After 15 rounds of voting, California Republican representative Kevin McCarthy secured enough votes to become the next speaker of the House.

Perhaps the biggest news of the night though was Alabama GOP representative Mike Rogers having to be held back from trying to get at Florida representative Matt Gaetz.

That particular incident occurred shortly after the 14th vote of the night when Gaetz, a vocal detractor of McCarthy once again refused to cast a vote for McCarthy. From there McCarthy approach a seated Gaetz with some words exchanged before a larger group started to form around the two. McCarthy eventually walked away without any Fort her incident, however, the CSPAN cameras panned back to catch GOP rep. Richard Hudson holding back Rogers from lunging at Gaetz.

There’s no doubt the theater from these last few days was amazing. However, in a congress that is notorious for seemingly being on vacation more than they’re actually at work getting shit done, it’s amazing to think that this particular congress may get even less accomplished. Sad, yet completely expected at this point considering just how fucked up this duopoly is.
