As the flames begin to settle, we’re now getting our first glimpses of the inside of the Notre Dame Cathedral which was almost completely devastated by a fire Monday afternoon in Paris.

The fire, which believed to of started in the attic of the gothic structure collapsed a good portion of the roof and completely destroyed the 300-year-old spire that stood atop the historical icon.

Luckily, it sounds as if a good portion of the Cathedral was able to be saved including the two bell towers and a number of relics stored within the building itself. Those relics include a crown of thorns and a piece of the cross, both of which are believed to have been part of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Renovations at the site also required much of the artwork to be cleared out of the Cathedral which luckily weren’t present during the time of the fire.

Originally thought to be constructed over an old temple dedicated to Jupiter, the Notre Dame Cathedral broke ground in 1163 and wouldn’t be completed until 1345. It is a marvel of gothic architecture that withstood the French Revolution, two World Wars, Nazi occupation and hopefully a tragic modern day fire.

French officials however made mention that they plan to rebuild as a fundraising drive will begin on Tuesday.
