Details are starting to emerge surrounding the death of Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell.

According to the Wayne County Medical Examiner, Cornell’s cause of death ruled as a suicide by hanging.

A preliminary autopsy was conducted later that morning. On Thursday afternoon, the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office issued a statement to E! News, saying, “The cause of death has been determined as hanging by suicide. A full autopsy report has not yet been completed.”

The medical examiner’s office added, “There is no additional information at this time.”

Cornell who was performing with Soundgarden at the FOX Theatre in downtown Detroit Wednesday night was found with a band around his neck in his MGM Grand Hotel Room around 12:05 am ET. According to reports, the 52-year old was pronounced dead at the scene.

“His wife Vicky and family were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing…” The rep added that his family “would like to thank his fans for their continuous love and loyalty and ask that their privacy be respected at this time.”

A staple in the emergence of the Seattle grunge scene during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, Cornell made headway with Soundgarden before taking on other projects. Those projects included the grunge super group Temple of the Dog as well as Audioslave who along with members of Rage Against the Machine became quite popular during the 2000’s.
